A Sad Day For Conspiracy Theorists
Conspiracy theorists around the world mourn today as one of their most cherished theories, that the US elections are rigged and can only be won by rich white men, is dealt a mortal wound by Barack Obama. Well in excess of the 270 electoral votes needed to become President of the United States of America, Obama has become the first minority leader of the most powerful country in the world.
I have to ask myself just how much McCain wanted to win however. His concession speech was masterful, he spoke from the heart and reaffirmed his beliefs while making a commitment to go forward and work with the new President for a stronger America. This is the kind of speech that has been sorely lacking from McCain lately, and it made me feel somewhat sorry to see him lose even though I’ve been a staunch Democrat for the entire campaign. No such sadness in Obama’s speech however. He also spoke of healing the partisan rifts between the two parties, but the majority of his time was spent talking about how the US is proving that it not only can, but will, make the changes it needs to go forward.
Any way you look at it, the US is in for a wild ride. For all Obama’s hopes and plans, he first has to deal with a massive economic crisis that needs resolution before he can even begin with his own platform. And even with the crushing majority that the Democrats have in both the Senate and House, there is going to be resistance to the kind of sweeping change that Obama favors. He has handled himself with dignity and straightforwardness so far, but that was just a warm up for how he needs to handle himself as President if he wants the mark he leaves on the country to be a good one. People flocked to him as a harbinger of change, and he embodied it just by being who he was in the position he was in, but now it’s up to him to make that a reality and all eyes are going to be watching. Succeed or fail, it will be spectacular either way. Let us all hope he succeeds, be one Democrat or Republican, it serves nobody well if the President goes down in smoke. If we want to maintain our role as a world leader, we need to find ways to make this work.
Of course, if everything goes pie-shaped, I’ll be up in Canada sipping drinks with my hot wife.
